There's a reason we've used images of a watch and a glass bottle in our website design - they both feature in the stories, and the actual objects both have a history relating to Oxford...

The watch was actually Lewis Carroll’s, and is now kept in the Museum of Oxford. It’s called a fob watch, and you had to wind it up regularly so it didn’t run slow and make you late.

And the glass bottle (unfortunately not saying 'Drink Me') is a Victorian medicine bottle discovered near Port Meadow and originally purchased at a chemist's shop on Broad Street, Oxford. It is also in the Museum of Oxford.

journeys_icon.jpg logo BL.jpg logo semlac.gif The original manuscript of the first version of the story, Alice's Adventures Under-ground, handwritten and illustrated by Lewis Carroll, is on display at the British Library.

As part of a project with the BL & SEMLAC we created 'Journeys to Wonderland', a Flash programme telling the story of how the story came to be told to Alice Liddell on that boat-trip up the Thames in 1862.
